Cars - The most ambitious Pixar's movie yet

John Lasseter's new Pixar film Cars is his most ambitious yet.

Following the likes of Finding Nemo and Toy Story, Cars is the latest animated movie from the Oscar-winning Pixar Animation Studios in the United States.

"This movie is by far the most complex film we have ever made," said Lasseter in Sydney.

"Really it is not about breaking records. Our films are driven by the needs of a story." Directed by Lasseter, the film tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a rookie race car that gets stuck in a small town on America's Route 66 highway.

"When we got into these towns, we realised that a picture says a thousand words," said Lasseter, a self-confessed "car geek".

"A computer likes things perfect and perfectly clean. The more that you add details to make it look believable, all that stuff has to be put in by hand. You have to create it and that adds so much complexity to the world."

Cars opens nationally on June 8, featuring the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman and Michael Keating.

"We really sweat every single tiny detail," said Lasseter.

"These films can last forever. Look at Snow White or Pinocchio, Dumbo or Bambi - they are truly going to live on forever."

With that in mind, Pixar films rarely feature topical current issues or jokes.

"We want people to watch our films 10 or 50 years from now," said Lasseter.

Lasseter is one of the founders of Pixar and is widely referred to as a computer-age Walt Disney. His other film credits include The Incredibles, A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc.

In January, Pixar was acquired by Disney for $US7.4 billion ($A9.85 billion).

Lasseter said not much had changed at Pixar since the purchase, and the studio would continue to release roughly one film a year.

"I was a little nervous at the beginning because of the reputation that Disney has had," explained Lasseter, who is now chief creative officer of the combined Pixar and Disney Animation Studios.

"It has been caught up in quite a bit of studio politics and all that, but we have cleared that away and we're focusing on what we focus on at Pixar - telling great stories with great characters and entertaining audiences."
