The French animation industry has garnered international recognition and now ranks first in Europe and is among the top tier in the world. The animated film, Kirikou et la sorcière (Kirikou and the Sorceress), released in December 1998, has become the standard for French animated films, achieving audience admissions in excess of one million in France alone.
The French animation industry benefits from an effective government supported funding system through the Centre national de la cinematographie (CNC). The CNC dispenses aid to all sectors of the audiovisual industry, while a number of local and regional government departments additionally provide support to animation studios in the form of grants and tax incentives. External funding for French animation studios also comes from Canada, Germany and the UK. In addition to domestically produced films such as La Prophetie des grenouilles, French animation studios have collaborated with studios from Europe and North America to produce animated series such as The Animals of Farthing Wood. The leading animation studios in France are La Fabrique, Folimage, France Animation, Carrere, Neuroplanet. Ellipseanime, Saban International, PMMP France, Studio Animage, Millimages, BKN Studios (formerly Aries Animation), Marathon Animation, Tele Images, Alphanim, Rooster Studio, Les Films du Triangle and Cymax.
