Algorithm
A procedure or set of rules for solving a problem.

Aliasing
An artifact that is due to limited resolution.

Alpha channel
The portion of a four-channel image that is used to store transparency information. Or key-channel – a channel to carry a key signal.

Animatics
A rough animation that gives some idea about the timing of a sequence. Essentially a moving storyboard.

Animation
Moving imagery that is created on frame-by-frame basis. This may be accomplished via the use of computers or with more traditional cel animation techniques.

Anti-aliasing
Techniques used to mitigate the artifacts caused by a lack of sufficient resolution.

Artifact
A visible flaw that is introduced by a process or operation but not part of the original.

ASCII
American Standard for Computer Information Interchange. A very common alphanumeric text interchange format. The term is used colloquially to refer to data that is stored in a text format that doesn’t require a special program to decode.

Aspect Ratio
A single number that is the result of dividing the width of an image by its height. The units used to measure the width and height are irrelevant, since they will cancel when divided together to give a unit less result e.g. a image that’s 1024 by 554 can be reduced to 1.85 : 1, so its ratio is simply called 1.85. However, a 1.778 is called 16:9.
