Upcoming graphics cards extremly power hungry

Power supply manufacturers are reporting that the upcoming graphics cards from both ATI and NVIDIA are going to have a massive power draw. Some Taiwanese companies have been briefed by both companies, ensuring the chip makers that there will be compatible power supplies available by the end of 2006, when the new chips are expected at the earliest.

While the specs for the new cards are unknown at this point, both the R600 and G80 chips are known to have DirectX 10 support, and seeing as this latest titbit can only signify a massive power draw from a very powerful GPU, expect to see a significant leap in performance when these boards ship.

Anandtech’s article on this has some pictures of some PSU concepts from Computex that manufacturers are testing to try and solve the graphics power issue.
